I used to be a hotel person. You know the type—loyalty programs, mini shampoo bottles, those oddly satisfying key cards. Then last summer happened, and everything changed.
My family and I booked a cottage in Maine. Nothing fancy, just a two-bedroom place near the water. But here's what hit me the moment we walked in: it felt like a home. Not someone else's home that we were invading, but genuinely ours for the week. The kids claimed their rooms. I made coffee in an actual kitchen. My wife curled up on the porch with her book.
That's when it clicked.
Hotels give you a bed and a bathroom. vacation rentals give you a life, temporarily. There's something profound about having space to breathe, to spread out, to exist without feeling like you're constantly in someone's lobby.
The cost factor surprised me too. Sure, the nightly rate looked higher at first glance. But then I did the math. No $18 breakfast buffets. No $7 bottles of water. No expensive dinners out every single night because, well, we had a kitchen. We hit the local farmer's market, cooked meals together, and probably saved hundreds of dollars.
Beyond money, there's the experience itself. Staying in a neighborhood instead of a tourist district meant we actually met locals. Our host recommended a taco truck that wasn't in any guidebook. We shopped where residents shopped. We lived like people who actually belonged there.
Don't get me wrong—hotels have their place. Quick business trips? Give me that Hampton Inn efficiency. But for real vacations, the ones where you're trying to recharge and reconnect? I'm convinced there's no better option.
My teenagers actually talked to us that week. We played board games. We sat around a fire pit. These sound like small things, but they're everything.
I'm already browsing places for next summer. Maybe a cabin in Colorado. Perhaps a beach house in Florida. The world feels bigger now, somehow. More accessible. More real.
